This New Orleans cemetery still carries the scars of one devastating summer. St. Patrick's Cemetery No. 1. It was established in 1841 for the city's growing Irish Catholic community. in-ground burials were once preferred because of tradition and cost. Then came the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1853. In August alone, approximately 1,100 victims were laid to rest here. The burials happened so quickly, they left the cemetery without orderly rows. Even today, the landscape still remembers.
